We designed a Static Holographic 3D Projector while working on the holographic cinema technology. The idea was very simple: if we could project a whole holographic movie, why not to project a single holographic slide? Such a 3-D image projector can be used for presentations, education and advertising, like regular slide-projectors are used, but taking the slide-shows up to a new level of quality.

Moreover, our static holographic projector can project a 3-D color image of a small real object. And if this small real object has moving parts, like a pendulum, its 3-D image will have the same moving parts. In 1995-1996 such units were demonstrated for the first time at the international exhibitions in Turin and Seoul.

Similar to the holographic movie system, the static 3d projector forms viewing zones. When the heads of viewers are in these zones, they can see a 3D color image. At the will of viewers the image can be projected on a surface of screen or outside of the limits of screen, anywhere between the screen and the audience.

Holographic projection of the small real object

The projector consists of a super-high light sensitive lens with a large aperture, holographic screen and quartz-halogen light tube. Lens diameter is 200 mm, focal distance is 150 mm. In the optical system there are lenses with focal length of 250 mm as well. The 3d projector on the picture above forms 6 viewing zones. A single viewing zone has 300-400 mm width. A distance between the screen and the audience is 4-6 meters. The holographic screen on the picture has dimensions 800x600 mm.

On this picture you can see a laboratory model of such 3d projector where a small ball is suspended on a thread. This is a real object, a ball-pendulum. The audience can see a 3d image of the oscillating ball at about half distance between them and the screen. In this case the object may have size up to 50x60 mm.

The Static Holographic Projectors can be made for larger screens, larger distances, larger objects, and for the larger audience – with unlimited number of viewing zones. It can be a new powerful tool for the business presentations and education, and can have a vast application in advertising.
